1945[1]
Dear Bob[2],
Deep
snow in the East, floods in the Ohio Valley, and southern Californians are
basking in sunny spring weather. It’s spring and I’d like to go to the beach!
But
March has seventeen teaching days and a rather full ushering schedule[3]:
to-wit three performances of Ballet Theater with Toumanova, “Gondoliers”, “H.M.S.Pinafore”, ”Trial by Jury”, Janssen Symphony with Dusolina Giannini, Zimbalist,
Schnabel (symphony), Alexander Kipinis, “Life with Father”, Marian Anderson,
Igor Gorin, Schnabel recital,Eric Lundorf with Dorothy Maynor. New opera “Costof the Empire,” Claudio Arrau, Erica Morini and Helen Hayes in “Harriet.” So
far Giannini and Schnabel were the most thrilling.
We
also expect to move into our new home soon, but we’re having trouble evicting
the tenants[4].
I hope it won’t be long before we’re settled.
Don
told about hearing “Tosca”. What are your musical opportunities? If any? What
sight-seeing have you done?
Read
today directions for sending fudge overseas. Next time I’ll know, but I never
dreamed the package would have to pursue you so far. Write when you can.

Often, ushering is non-paid, but you get to see the performance. It is a good
way to see many cultural performances that would normally be out of one’s
budget.
[4]
Unknown if this is related to wartime housing shortage or just the periodic
run-in with a bad tenant.
