Wednesday[1]
Dear Robert[2]-
Thanks for
the birthday card- I’m overwhelmed to think that in the midst of your busy life
you should remember such a relatively unimportant event. I remembered Ted’s[3]
just two days before my own, but Tillie[4]
with her usual promptness was right there on the dot. We celebrated quite nobly
- momma had us in to dinner - we drove out to Henderson’s Gardens later and
then played some bridge. We have several permanent reminders of the day – an Elberta peach tree from Aunt Beth and a new flowering quince called the stau???[5]
and a hibiscus – only in the root form now - the cl????[6].
I found this in the Bee or I guess that’s
the answer to your absentio outing[7].
Which reminds me that we must change our address and registration, too.
I read your
last letter to momma and I must say you did sound depressed. Well it would be
too bad if you didn’t make the grade but I’ve found this out throughout my long
and observant life – that if you really think you want something and work hard
towards it and then still don’t get it – it’s for the best. Something much more
satisfactory takes its place soo – who knows. By the time you come home for
your furlough in March or April you can relax on the farm[8].
Love, Cornelia[9]
[1]
Posted marked MAR 1, 1944. Wednesday was on March 1st that year.
[2]
Addressed to A/C Robert Richert;
Carlsbad; new Mexico; Aviation Cadet Training. Very doubtful that a letter would
be delivered today with that simple address.
[3]
Robert and Cornelia’s brother.
[4]
Ted’s wife.
[5]
Word difficult to transcribe, but from the context, a varietal name.
[6]
Again, difficult to transcribe and most likely a varietal name. With local
names or origins, varietal name might not even be in any standard catalogues.
[7]
This phrase “ absentio outing” is an uncertain transcription and the meaning of
the entire sentence is not clear.
[8]
Cornelia’s home in Clovis, CA.

Return address on cover’s back: Mrs W E Downing Rt 1, Box 52a; Clovis, Calif
