Lydia to Robert 7 Mar 1944

Tuesday[1]
Dear Bob[2]

What a discouraging letter you write! You know you’re all set – didn’t you write me – that your first bomb “hit he spot?” and you’re into March – so that’s the turning point, isn’t it? Anyway – as you say, don’t worry about it[3].

Thank you for the bobby pins. Bettie thanks you, too, the fact that they are black is not a discouraging item. Now adays (sic) – we take booby pins and don’t worry about the color!

I have a new permanent which I like. It takes a week or two to get toned down – but it is wonderful to have fairly short hair again. And I can wear a hat again – in fact I’ve been trying on Easter hats and have almost succumbed to a bright red one – with a veil and all. Imagine me in such frivolity!

Water phoned last night – it’s always good to hear him. Our renters have left – and evidently good riddance. Walter says the house was a mess – the fellow tried to kill his wife[4] and Walter has spent days cleaning up. He says nothing is really damaged – he collected damages for the house, though. Says they evidently opened canned goods & just spilled it around – what sort of phobia is that? Poor Walter – he hesitated for three weeks before he had nerve enough to tell me.

Soon I’ll be leaving here – not in a few weeks tho. I want a few dollars cash in my pocket. Which I can’t seem to accomplish. I was lucky enough to be able to get two new tires – tubes – which cost money[5], But I’m so glad to be able to get them – two of my tires were plumb smooth. And one of my tubes – by actual count – had nineteen patches! I’ve had the radiator fixed – the door fixed – and am all set for a drive to Fresno! Now when I get income tax out of the way – I’ll have clean sailing, I hope!

As to the $60.00 = you can do as you like about it. I don’t need it – and whatever you want to do will be O.K. So you’ve saved $100.00 – good for you! How can some people append so much! Which applies to me – as to many others.

Remember Gil? The tall dark haired fellow you met at Ray’s house? He is now in the Navy – tried for the Air Corps but was too old. The department had a party for him last Saturday. It looks as if many of the fellows will be going[6] – there are a lot of 1 A classifications[7] floating around!

Good luck ----

Lydia[8]
